The air within the chamber is made electrically conductive (ionized) by bombardment of the nitrogen and oxygen particles with alpha particles emitted by minute source of radioactive material. A voltage applied across the ionization chambers causes a very small current to flow as the ions travel to the electrode of opposite polarity. One chamber is substantially closed to the atmosphere and provides compensation for long term variations in temperature and humidity. The other chamber is open, and when visible or invisible combustive particles enter the chamber they attach themselves to the ions and cause a reduction in mobility and thus a reduction in current flow. The reduced flow change of the electrode voltage which reaching a pre-determined level, results in an alarm.
