WIRE BASKET SUPPORT SYSTEMS
PART 1 - GENERAL
1.01 RELATED DOCUMENTS:
A. Drawings and general provisions of Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.
B. Requirements of the following Division 16 Sections apply to this section:
1. Division 7 Section "Fire Stopping" where indicated.
2. Division 16 Section "Basic Electrical Materials and Methods".
3. Division 16 Section "Wires and Cables".
1.02 SUMMARY:
A. The work covered under this section consists of the furnishing of all necessary labor,
supervision, materials, equipment, tests and services to install complete wire basket
support systems as shown on the drawings.
B. Wire basket support systems are defined to include, but are not limited to straight
sections of continuous wire mesh, field formed horizontal and vertical bends, tees,
drop outs, supports and accessories.
1.03 SUBMITTALS:
A. General: submit the following in accordance with Conditions of Contract and
Division 1 Specification Sections:
A. Submittal Drawings: Submit drawings of wire basket and accessories
including connector assemblies, clamp assemblies, brackets, splice plates,
splice bars, grounding clamps and hold down plates showing accurately scaled
components.
B. Product Data: Submit manufacturer’s data on wire basket support system
including, but not limited to, types, materials, finishes and inside depths.
C. Submit a detailed calculations of capacity of cables installed inside the wiring
basket assuring a maximum 30% occupancy for power labels & 25% for I.T
cables.
D. Adequate supports shall be provided to prevent stress on cables where they
enter or leave the wiring basket. Where wire basket extend transversely
through partitions and wall additional protection in the form of fire proof –
non-combustible barriers shall be provided.

E. Wiring basket must be specially reinforced to have high load bearing
capabilities across wide spans, maximum deflection should not exceed 0.5% in
the longest span. Also it shall be mechanically designed to give high torsional
rigidity and good resistance against lateral loading.
F. Bends in either vertical or horizontal directions should be dimensioned such
that cables may not be curved less than 15 times its diameter.
G. All components and accessories shall be hot-dip galvanizxed steel after
manufacturer to give resistance to corrosion.
H. Field Test Reports: in compliance with "Field Quality Control" Article of this
section.
I. Maintenance data for inclusion in "Operating and maintenance Manual".
1.04 QUALITY ASSURANCE:
A. Manufacturers: firms regularly engaged in manufacture of cable trays and fittings of
types and capacities required, whose products have been in satisfactory use in similar
service for not less than 5 years.
B. Single-Source Responsibility: all cable tray components shall be the product of a
single manufacturer.
C. Coordination Drawings: include cable tray systems in coordination drawings.
D. NEC Compliance: Comply with NEC, as applicable to construction and installation of
cable tray and cable channel systems (Article 318, NEC).
E. NFPA Compliance Comply with NFPA 70B, “Recommended Practice for Electrical
Equipment Maintenance” pertaining to installation of cable tray systems.

1.05 DRAWINGS
A. The drawings, which constitute a part of these specifications, indicate the
general route of the wire basket support systems. Data presented on these
drawings is as accurate as preliminary surveys and planning can determine
until final equipment selection is made. Accuracy is not guaranteed and field
verification of all dimensions, routing, etc., is required.
B. Specifications and drawings are for assistance and guidance, but exact
routing, locations, distances and levels will be governed by actual field
conditions. Contractor is directed to make field surveys as part of his work
prior to submitting system layout drawings.
1.06 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING:
A. Deliver wire basket support systems and components carefully to avoid
breakage, bending and scoring finishes. Do not install damaged equipment.
B. Store wire basket and accessories in original cartons and in clean dry space;
protect from weather and construction traffic.
PART 2 - PRODUCTS
2.01 MANUFACTURERS:
A. Available Manufacturers: subject to compliance with requirements, specifications,
drawings and regulations.
B. Manufcturer to be selected from the list of recommended manufacturers.
2.02 WIRE BASKET SECTIONS AND COMPONENTS:
A. General: Provide wire basket of types and sizes indicated; with connector
assemblies, clamp assemblies, connector plates, splice plates and splice bars.
Construct units with rounded edges and smooth surfaces; in compliance with
applicable standards; and with the following additional construction features.
B. Materials and Finishes: Material and finish specifications for each wire basket
type are as follows:
1. Electroplated Zinc: Straight sections shall be made from steel meeting the
minimum mechanical properties of ASTM A510 and shall be electroplated
zinc in accordance with ASTM B633 SC2.
2. Stainless Steel: Straight sections and accessories shall be made from AISI
Type 304 Stainless Steel.
3. Paint: Straight sections shall be painted [Computer &
Telecommunication White] over Electrodeposited Zinc.
4. Pre-Galvanized Zinc: Wall brackets and other pre-galvanized accessories
shall be coated with zinc in accordance with ASTM A653.
5. Electro-Galvanized Zinc: Support accessories and miscellaneous
hardware shall be coated in accordance with ASTM B633 SC3. All
threaded components shall be coated in accordance with ASTM B633
SC1.

2.03 TYPE OF WIRE BASKET SUPPORT SYSTEM:
A. All straight section longitudinal wires shall be straight (with no bends).
B. Wire basket shall be made of high strength steel wires and formed into a
standard 50 mm by 100mm wire mesh pattern with intersecting wires welded
together. All wire ends along wire basket sides (flanges) shall be rounded
during manufacturing for safety of cables and installers.
C. Wire basket sizes shall conform to the following nominal criteria:
1. Straight sections shall be furnished in standard 300mm lengths.
D. All fittings shall be field formed as needed.
E. All splicing assemblies shall be the bolted type using serrated flange locknuts.
Hardware shall be either yellow zinc dichromate in accordance with ASTM
B633 SC2 or AISI Type 304 Stainless Steel.
F. Wire basket supports shall be center support hangers, trapeze hangers or wall
brackets.
G. Trapeze hangers or center support hangers shall be supported by 75mm or
10mm diameter rods.
H. Special accessories shall be furnished as required to protect, support and
install a wire basket support system.
I. Earthing Connector: for plastic coated trays or ladders, provide earthing
connector on each coupling between adjacent sections.
2.04 SUPPORTS AND CONNECTORS:
A. Wiring Bsket supports and connectors, including bonding jumpers shall be as
recommended by cable tray manufacturer.
B. Bolts and screws shall be cadmium plated or electrolytically galvanized.
2.05 FIRE STOPPING:
A. General: materials shall be approved for fire ratings consistent with penetrated
barriers.
B. General: materials shall be labeled by Manufacturer for fire ratings consistent with
penetrated barriers.
C. Sleeves: galvanized steel pipe sleeves. Sizes as indicated or minimum required
size for cable or cable group to be installed. Provide details.
D. Sealing Fittings: Suitable for sealing cables in sleeves or core drilled holes.
2.06WARNING SIGNS:
A. Lettering: 37.5 mm (1-1/2-inch) high, black on yellow background with legend
"WARNING! NOT TO BE USED AS WALKWAY, LADDER, OR SUPPORT
FOR LADDERS OR PERSONNEL".
B. Materials and Fastening: conform to Section "Electrical Identification".

PART 3 - EXECUTION
3.01 INSTALLATION:
A. Install wire basket as indicated; in accordance with recognized industry
practices (NEMA VE-2 2000), to ensure that the cable tray equipment
complies with requirements of NEC, and applicable portions of NFPA 70B
and NECA’s “Standards of Installation” pertaining to general electrical
installation practices.
B. Coordinate wire basket with other electrical work as necessary to properly
interface installation of wire basket runway with other work.
C. Provide sufficient space encompassing wire basket to permit access for
installing and maintaining cables.
3.02 EARTHING:
A. Electrically earth cable trays and ensure continuous electrical conductivity of
wiring basket system. Use tray as an equipment earthing conductor for itself only,
not for connected equipment.
3.03 FIELD TESTING:
A. Test wire basket support systems to ensure electrical continuity of bonding
and grounding connections, and to demonstrate compliance with specified
maximum grounding resistance. See NFPA 70B, Chapter 18, for testing and
test methods.
B. Manufacturer shall provide test reports witnessed by an independent testing
laboratory of the “worst case” loading conditions outlined in this specification
and performed in accordance with the latest revision of NEMA VE-1.
C. Anchorage: test pull-out resistance of one of each type, size, and anchorage
material for toggle bolts and powder-driven threaded studs and as requested by
the Engineer on site.
3.04 CLEANING AND FINISH REPAIR:
A. Upon completion of installation of wiring basket, inspect basket, fittings, and
accessories. Remove burrs, dirt, and construction debris and repair damaged
finish including chips, scratches, and abrasions.
B. Galvanized Finish: repair damage with a zinc-rich paint recommended by the
wiring basket manufacturer.
C. PVC or Paint Finish: repair damage with matching touch-up coating
recommended by the wiring basket manufacturer.
